Best Stone for Chimneys in New England

New England fieldstone veneer — mosaic, random or ledgestone patterns — is the most common chimney choice because it matches the region's existing stonework and handles freeze-thaw cycling well when installed with correct flashing and a cap.

Chimney veneer performs based mostly on the details rather than the stone itself: a cap or crown that sheds water, correct flashing where the chimney meets the roof, and a mortar and setting system rated for exterior adhered veneer. Thin veneer is often chosen for chimney rebuilds and re-facing because it adds little weight. Full bed stone remains an option where the structure and footing allow it.
