Calcium Chloride vs Rock Salt on Pavers
Both are chlorides. Calcium chloride works at lower temperatures and at lower application rates, while rock salt (sodium chloride) is cheaper but stops working in deep cold and is often over-applied. Always follow the paver manufacturer's de-icer guidance for your product.
Practical guidance for hardscape surfaces:
- Apply the minimum amount needed; excess chloride increases surface stress and staining.
- Remove snow mechanically first so the de-icer works on ice, not snow.
- Sand or grit adds traction without chemical exposure.
- Newly installed concrete pavers are more vulnerable in their first winter — be conservative.
