How to Match Existing Natural Stone

Bring a sample or clear photos in daylight, note the pattern (mosaic, ledgestone, ashlar), the joint style and the stone thickness. Natural stone varies by quarry and production run, so matching is done by pattern and color range rather than an exact product code.

Tips that make matching easier: - Photograph the wall straight on and include a tape measure or a common object for scale. - If you can, bring a loose stone from the original work. - Note whether joints are tight-fit, mortared or dry-stack, since the joint reads as strongly as the stone. - Weathered stone has aged; new material will look brighter until it settles in. Where an exact match is not available, blending a compatible stone at a transition or corner often reads better than a near miss across a whole wall.
